On February 25 -26, 2011, Houssam Eddine Hariri
High School hosted an IB PYP in-school workshop under the title
“Promoting International-Mindedness”. The purpose of this workshop
presented by the IB educators Alix McNiel, Samantha Cook, and Sean Walker
was to deepen the PYP teachers' understanding of international-mindedness
and experience a range of engagements for the aim of successful
implementation. In order to develop understanding of international-mindedness,
discussions and reflections were viewed from the perspective of
teachers, young learners, and parents. During this training, teachers
were able to explore their personal cultural identities as a key
understanding because international-mindedness is about understanding
the self in order to effectively connect with others. In addition, our
school community which strives to demonstrate and model the IB Learner
Profile has learned new strategies and practices to be implemented
within the school curriculum and climate in order to develop open-minded
learners willing to take actions and make a difference in their country
and the world. It is essential for our school to encourage learners to
make connections between life in school, life at home, and life in the
world. It is also vital to provide opportunities to learn about issues
that have local and global significance. Moreover, teachers have
recognized that international-mindedness is about engaging the students
with learning experiences through which multiple perspectives are
explored.
HHHS will remain committed to offer teachers continuous professional
development to ensure the provision of high quality of International
Education to the PYP learners.
