Community Service in Grade Five
Last October, grade 5 students, led by their teachers, demonstrated how
to take learning beyond the classroom to make a difference in the local
community. The teachers challenged their students to assess the needs
and wants of the Houssam Hariri High School community by writing
questionnaires and then using the results of their survey to put a
service idea into action. The students organized and carried out a
community service action independently and evaluated the success of
their chosen activity based on a variety of criteria including customer
satisfaction. Among the activities were assisting in the classroom,
initiating a healthy cafeteria, and teaching younger children new games
and computer skills. The event was a chance for our younger citizens to
learn responsibility, experience the satisfaction that comes with
helping others, and to acquire new skills.
