Role Playing Activity in ESL Classes
Role playing is a teaching strategy which allows students to take free-risk positions in hypothetical situations. In other words, in role playing, the student represents and experiences a character known in everyday life. As a teaching strategy, role playing teaches empathy and understanding of different perspectives, concerns, values, and positions held by other people.
Based on the above strategy, 6eme (A&B) students, who are taking the theme of food this month, are requested to role-play in order to create fun in the classroom and grasp the required concept easily. After long discussions with students on the history of the sandwich, the one who invented the sandwich, and the reasons behind his invention, along with brainstorming and listing various kinds of food ( from starters to main dishes and desserts), students were asked to choose any recipe of food they want. They had to write its name, ingredients, and process of preparation.
On Tuesday, October 4th, almost all students were happy and excited to present the recipes of some kinds of food, such as Cannelloni, Fajita, Chocolate Cake, and Shawarma. Seba Mrowe (6eme B), for example, preferred to bring the ingredients with her to class. She role-played the character of a famous chef on Fatafeat Channel and served her friends with the most delicious Chocolate Ball recipe they have ever eaten!
