TO BE AN INQUIRER, BE CURIOUS
“Be curious always! For knowledge will not acquire
you: you must acquire it.”
Sudie Back
Eating healthy food is one way to be a balanced learner and have a
healthy lifestyle. The learners look to grownups to understand healthy
eating habits.
So throughout the PYP theme “Who We Are” and under the unit title
“Health and Well Being”, the learners were asked to sort and classify
the food into various food groups like grains, vegetables, fruits, meat,
milk, and oils groups which aroused their curiosity to realize what each
group has. After that, the learners watched an Encarta about the food
pyramid and form an idea about these 6 food groups. Later, they went
back to the dramatic center and were excited to sort them and inquire
about the type of sorting they did which is sorting by kind. Moreover,
this concept of classification was supported by the food pyramid mat
that reinforced the learners’ understanding of the food groups and the
different sections of it. Also, the learners learned what food they
should have the most of to keep them healthy. As a result of this food
classification and sorting, the learners were able to use their thinking
skills to create a healthy dish by trying to choose healthy food from
the 6 food groups.
Therefore, learning about the food groups aroused the children’s
curiosity to make healthy choices for their healthy meals each day.
